Bio

Pietro Maria Castiglioni, known as Piero, was born in Lierna (Como) in 1944. He graduated in architecture in 1970, where he lives and works. In 1972 he worked with Ugo La Pietra on the exhibition 'Italy: the new domestic landscape' at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. From 1973 to 1979 he worked with his father Livio in Via Presolana, focusing on lighting projects. Today he designs lighting solutions for museums, exhibitions, theatres, auditoriums, urban spaces, retail, places of worship, yachts, places of transport, hôtellerie, showrooms together with his team. Designer of lamps, often created for a specific project, as each project is unique; in some cases designed and produced by craftsmen in small quantities, such as the 'Scintilla' system produced by Fontana Arte in 1983, or the 'Cestello' system produced by iGuzzini in 1986. A university professor at the master's degree in lighting design at the Milan Polytechnic and at the University of Geneva, he is invited to lighting design conferences all over the world. During his career, he has received many awards including Grande Ufficiale dell'Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana in 2020 and a 50-year career award from AIDI (Associazione Italiana Di Illuminazione) in 2021.
During his 50-year career, he has collaborated with several architects, including ten Pritzker Architecture Prize winners.
